There are so many fun watercolor techniques to include in your artwork that result in different looks! Check out these 5 options!
Techniques in this blog:
- Salt Technique
- Spray Bottle Technique
- Crinkle Plastic Wrap Technique
- Smooth Plastic Wrap Technique
- Q-tip Technique
Supplies
Starting out, we will need watercolor paint, water, paint brushes, salt, a spray bottle, plastic wrap, q-tips, and of course your paper.
Salt Technique
Simply apply the paint to the paper and sprinkle on salt while it is still wet. Let the paint dry then brush off the salt. You will be left with this type of pattern:
Spray Bottle Technique
Spray your paper with water, then add a lot of paint pigment to your brush and add it to the water on the page. Watch the color spread throughout the sprayed water and enjoy this type of result:
Crinkle Plastic Wrap Technique
Add the paint to your artwork in the designated space, then take some plastic wrap and crinkle it all up. Place a crinkled plastic wrap ball on top of your wet paint. Let the paint dry and take off the plastic wrap. You will end up with this fun kind of geometric pattern:
Smooth Plastic Wrap Technique
For our next watercolor technique you will want a nice sized dollop of paint-filled water on your paper. Take your plastic wrap and place it flat over the top of your paint. Use your fingers to spread it around underneath the plastic wrap. Once it is completely dry you can lift the plastic wrap to find a unique texture of random edges and veiny patterns.
Q-tip Technique
Q-tips are a great resource while painting with watercolors. They are nice and absorbent, making for a good option when lifting paint. You can do this by rubbing the q-tip along the wet paint in the area you want to lighten. Here is an example:
I encourage you to include these fun watercolor techniques in your artwork if you haven’t before! If you have experimented with these, I’d love to hear how! What kinds of pictures have you used these looks in? If you want to share, you can reach me through my contact page or social media!
There are many more fun options we will explore in the future, but until then, happy painting!
